Why does my recording look nothing like the samples?

The way Chanalyzer displays the data depends on many factors. Basically the Topographic view displays how often a certain point is being populated.  Here are a few variables:

  • How long you collect data.
  • How much RF traffic is in the air.
  • The different 2.4GHz devices in your area.
  • The distance you are from an access point, microwave, or cordless phone.

Different devices broadcast in certain patterns which we call Device Signatures.  Your data will not look like our samples.  We chose these because they have a clearly defined shape to distinguish them from other devices.

Keep in mind that an access point may broadcast in both 802.11b and 802.11g.  The longer you collect data, the more defined both signals will become.

Tip: If you are seeing very low signals, try downloading, then try uploading.  You will be able to see the router send information (lower dBM) and then upload from your laptop Wi-Fi card(higher dBM).

Try browsing our user submitted recordings to get a better idea:

Or better yet, walk around with the Wi-Spy and experiment with it a little!
